Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico
On the Friday after Thanksgiving, trucks and bicycles began arriving at our house to start work on a new sea wall. We already have a sea wall with a rusted-out decorative steel fence, but the water stains inside the house, caused when the last big hurricane blew out the sliding glass doors and deposited 18 inches of sand inside back in the early ‘90s, are evidence enough that it’s not quite sufficient! Miguel, the contractor, and his crew (supervised by a doleful dalmation) are now digging down a meter into the sand, pouring footings, and laying up a thick, steel reinforced block wall in front of the old one. We’ll soon have a double sea wall, which is about as good as it can get. Perry checks the quality and cleanliness of the sand, whether the steel is property placed, the thickness of the pour, etc. So far, so good. These guys come highly regarded and seem to know what they’re doing!
So, every morning, Monday through Saturday, six or seven young guys arrive, rig an antenna to their boombox, and crank up the Mexican rock and ranchera music. Then they begin digging and mixing and pouring and block-laying. Until 4:00 P.M. when they finish the work day, the air is filled with music, chatter, and laughter. These are sights and sounds to warm the heart! (Check the Photo Album titled "Sea Wall.")
In the meantime, Perry has finalized (we think) the design for the entire house, and it is beautiful! We’re ready to make this happen – as long as we can afford to pay the bills.
After the sea wall, come the garage and a new guest bedroom. Watch for late breaking reports! — CK
