This is the tale of a brief three-day trip — a sumptuous, almost hedonistic feast for the eyes. It starts in Chur, a charming little city in eastern Switzerland that is over-blessed with visual and culinary delights! And from there, a ride over the Alps on the beautiful Bernina Express is just one unbelievable, breathtaking view after another.

After a fine visit to Basel, we make our way through the city daily life, and through a large bike-park area, to depart from the city’s Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station). It’s a pleasant summer day at the end of July, and we’ll be heading away from the Rhine and into the heart of Switzerland. We missed the big annual Art Basel extravaganza that happens in June, but we had several wonderful days of wandering this fine city on our own. And now we’ll be exploring more of this exquisite country on our way to Zürich.
We departed from the luxury of our Viking cruise at Basel’s river port of St Johann, and a local taxi whisked us off to a room at a nice lodging house. We packed a lot into our brief stay there. Come on along...
